Happy New Year!
Our pan banging brought out the neighbors. What a cute tradition. Can’t wait to teach O. He got to stay up late, but not until midnight!

Jeremy's New Year's Resolution
K: What is your resolution?
J: To be a better husband to my loving wife.
Crowded family van: Awww!
Mother-in-law to father-in-law: Is that yours too?

New Year's Eve, Day 4
Last night eight adults and our sweet kiddo filled Grandma Millie’s house with stories and laughter. My father-in-law has two brothers and they were here telling on each other. Millie and the brothers also told great stories I had not heard of about Grandpa Jerry. I heard about trips from Indiana to the Florida swaps for Cypress wood, for his clock-making hobby and being stopped by police...

Headed Out, Day 3
On our way to the Indiana Children’s Museum, three (or is it four) stories of dinosaurs, art and science. I’ve been there two other times, once with Jeremy when we were dating and once with Owen and his cousins. Today we will play with five adults and four kiddos, including an infant. Last night for dinner, nine adults and three children were served, plus a new baby. I’m very...

Made it to Indy
2:47 a.m. local time in Fairland, IN. We drove straight through. Owen woke up, asked if he could play, then searched the house for his second cousins. “I love this house!” Owen declared.

13th hour
In Illinois, the 13th hour of the trip. It’s pitch black out. My only other trip to Illinois was 1999. I met neither Oprah nor Obama. Think of them when I think of here.

Indy trip, Day 1
Highlights: Owen holding my hand for hours because he’s tired. Seeing the Clinton Presidential Library from the highway. GOP in-laws did not care to stop. Hearing in-laws bicker over driving. Jeremy and I snicker in the back seat. I grew up in a single parent home and missed out on these moments. Reading my new David Sedaris book “When You Are Engulfed in Flames”, a birthday...

I'm a "doer"
I like to give unsolicited advice, but hate to receive it - especially after the fact and there’s no time machine for me to go back and change things, so keep that advice to yourself, thank you! So I don’t go in much for horoscopes or how I’m the year of the dragon, etc. Advice columns are much more my thing.  But Jeremy sent me this link, typealyzer, which purports to take a...

"Bush shoe" maker sees orders surge →
I also heard this morning on our local NPR affiliate, in a story about the world’s reception of Barack Obama as our new president, that Jordan’s parliament observed a moment of silence in honor of shoe-thrower al-Zeidi.

Ron Kirk for Obama Cabinet →
Looks like former Dallas Mayor Ron Kirk will be named as United States Trade Representative, a Cabinet level position.  It was great to hear Kirk earlier this year on our local NPR affiliate, KERA 90.1, touting then Democratic primary candidate Barack Obama. I don’t know Kirk personally, but two friends do. I got to see a “Second City” show in Denver during the Democratic...

The Evolution of Hide and Seek
When Owen was younger, he loved to hide from Jeremy. We’d hear J’s car door shut, or in the days when our two car garage fit two cars, hear the garage door opening and run and hide. Owen never got the concept of being quiet. He’d laugh so hard, we’d easily be discovered. As he aged, he’d tell us, “Mommy, I am going to hide in the kitchen, OK?” That sure...

Shoe Throwing Iraqi Journalist →
Wow, this is a story. While I have the utmost respect for the position of POTUS, I do not respect George Bush - for so many reasons. The Iraqi invasion and occupation has killed and wounded hundreds of thousands of innocent people and broken a country. E-mails and FB posts are flying about this shoe-throwing journalist. From all the news stories heard/read today, this man is a new Iraqi hero. ...

GCISD Proposed School Bell Changes Survey →
To save hundreds of thousands of dollars by not buying new school buses and adding to the poor air quality of our community, the GCISD is proposing changing the school bell schedule.  If you live in the GCISD, regardless of whether you have kiddos in the system (like us, Owen is too young), please take a moment to complete this GCISD survey on the proposed changes. This is a cost-friendly and...

"The Quiet Heroism of George Burlage"
I am so lucky to have three girlfriends from my college days that distance and time apart have no impact. I love these women and when we are together it is like a day hasn’t passed between our last visit. They are a blessing in my life and our visits are far too rare. I lost my last two remaining grandparents this year and the sympathy of one friend was very heartfelt as she had a...

"Stunning" Jobless Numbers
In the course of an hour, I heard three reports about the stunning unemployment numbers. Jeremy came home a few weeks ago announcing layoffs at his company. During his review he was told no one in his group would be laid off. Our next door neighbor works at J’s company and on a recent warm-enough night, they spoke on the front lawn about the layoffs and a company-wide e-mail saying it was...
